"Mr President, I would like to draw Members’ attention to one particular item of Parliament’s projected expenditure. That item is a EUR 52 million allocation to build a ‘House of European History’. The European Parliament has already built one museum to celebrate itself – the Parliamentarium in Brussels. This new museum will cost, apparently, double the amount of the Parliamentarium. I suggest that this House of European History be renamed the House of EU Vanity. It is superfluous and unnecessary.
The Bureau of the European Parliament approved this project unanimously, and I would note that our group is not represented on that Bureau. The project has been approved without any proper debate. The decision has not been subject to adequate scrutiny and it should not be accepted. But there is a wider and more important point here. The allocation of EUR 52 million for a ‘House of European History’ epitomises and exemplifies how the EU and its institutions spend our money. The process is characterised by being wasteful, secretive and entirely contemptuous of the taxpayer."@en1
