"I am happy to vote in favour of this report, despite the fact that, in principle, it extends the liberalisation process of ground handling in some EU airports, particularly in Germany. Many of us were facing a dilemma. Whilst recognising the unhappiness of airport workers in those two countries, another rejection would have left us with the status quo in all other Member States, which would have been totally unacceptable. Open liberalisation in many countries has led to a diminishing not only of social and working conditions, but also to a poorer service to the travelling public. This position would have been unacceptable, and whilst this report is not perfect, Parliament has at least secured some protection measures for affected workforces across the rest of the EU. It is because I believe that 1 % of something is better than 100 % of nothing that I voted in favour."@en1
