"I would again like to congratulate Mr Karas. I have to say that I welcome the greater transparency in relation to banking practices, and here I am at odds with our colleague Dr Tannock, because capping bankers’ bonuses to one year’s salary in my opinion does not go nearly far enough. Because in my country, the bonuses paid to bankers are immoral in the extreme, and this is at a time when austerity is very much a reality for our people and when the Irish taxpayer has had to bail out our broken bank system. I think it is also regrettable that this report makes no mention of stopping the awarding of bonuses where a bank or financial institution is operating at a loss or is in financial difficulty. There was public uproar when the former managing director of Allied Irish Bank in my country received a bonus while the bank was actually operating at a loss. Steps need to be taken to ensure that this is never repeated. The creation of a performance banking table will allow us to see exactly how well banks in my country are performing in comparison to banks in other Member States, so I welcome the report."@en1
