"Mr President, since this Parliament voted to reject the Groote report, the carbon price has halved to just over two euros. That is not a technical issue. That means that investment in renewable energy, CCS and indeed nuclear power becomes more expensive across the European Union. I think this is a very black day for EU climate policy. It is a particularly bad day for my country. I note that the Tory MEPs have mainly disappeared across there, but apparently they have been going around telling everybody that their vote against their own government today is symbolic. I want to know what it is a symbol of. Have they become so eurosceptic that they reject European solutions to everything; that they reject the views of the CBI, Shell, Unilever, Tesco, Phillips, Kingfisher, Johnson and Johnson and the UK Corporate Leaders Group? Or perhaps it is symbolic of the fact that they want to challenge their Prime Minister and reject the greening. Daniel Hannan talked about Mrs Thatcher. Two former Tory environment ministers have this morning put an article in the media saying that Mrs Thatcher recognised climate change and that she would have wanted the EU to act on climate change. But here we have Tory MEPs, who clearly do not understand business, putting their euroscepticism before the interests of British jobs and British industry."@en1
