"I am pleased that MEPs have approved EGF funding for Agile S.r.l., the Italian IT services provider. There were 1 257 redundancies at the company, of whom 856 workers have been targeted for EGF co-funding. My own country Ireland has a significant IT services sector, therefore my fellow Irish MEPs and I are aware of how susceptible the industry can be to the fluxes of globalised trade. I am confident that the Italian authorities have provided a sensible balance of options in their EGF proposal for Agile, including postgraduate education, entrepreneurship promotion and contributions to business start-up, hiring benefits, mentoring after reintegration into work and job-search allowances. As Founding Co-Chair of Parliament’s Interest Group on Carers, I was particularly heartened to see a measure included contributing towards special expenses for carers of dependent persons. Such thoughtful and innovative uses of the EGF remind us of the Fund’s intrinsic value as a bulwark against the often brutal realities of our globalised economies, and I hope and expect that the Italian workers who lost their jobs at Agile will use their allocations to find new sources of employment in the coming years."@en1
