"I welcome the approval of EUR 5.03 million in EGF aid for workers made redundant at the Antonio Merloni SpA company in Italy in late 2011. In its assessment, the Commission correctly noted that the impact of the economic and financial crisis on enterprises, such as Merloni, which manufacture domestic appliances constitutes a legitimate trigger of the Fund. Merloni experienced a significant downturn in business when the first wave of the global crisis broke. This was significantly – and predictably – exacerbated by the inability to access vital credit as a lifeline to survival, due to the global downturn. 1 517 workers lost their jobs, and Italy is seeking EGF aid for all of these former Merloni employees. The menu of personalised services to be co-funded by the EGF includes a welcome, integrated mix of retraining, upskilling and tailored assistance. Yet again, the EGF has demonstrated its obvious value at a time when European workers face a spectrum of uncertainty not seen for generations. I urge those European leaders who continue to form a minority blocking continuation of the Fund to read the details of the Merloni case, and reconsider."@en1
