"I voted in favour of this report on incidental catches of cetaceans, and support the call for much stronger regulation in this area (there will be a further and more ambitious proposal put forward in 2015). The question of minimising the impact of fishing activities on the often already threatened cetacean population (whales, dolphins, and porpoises) can be complex and controversial. The European Commission’s regulation to solve the problem is focused on the use of acoustic deterrent devices and increasing the information available regarding cetaceans. In Wales, we put the utmost importance on protecting the marine environment, as reflected in our excellent Marine Biology departments in our coastal universities."@en1
