"Mr President, I too support this resolution. It is hard to take in the figures that we hear about the number of prisoners that have been held – 4 500 or 4 900! There have been 750 complaints of torture and abuse filed against the Israeli security agency. Not only has no justice been done as a result of the complaints, but no criminal investigations have even been opened.
The Israeli authorities must respect the rights of Palestinian prisoners and fully implement the recommendations of the United Nations. The practice of arrest and imprisonment of Palestinians, often for doing nothing more than taking part in peaceful demonstrations, is totally unacceptable. I have been there to hear the harrowing stories from the prisoners’ families, and it is totally unacceptable, too, that so many women and children are detained without charge.
I would also support the call for a delegation from this Parliament to make a visit. We need to demand the release of the prisoners, and I support the comments that my colleagues have made."@en1
