"Mr President, we here in the European Union, and particularly in the Parliament, have very, very good relations with Bangladesh, both through its diaspora and through cooperation with its offices. This is why we have the right and duty to speak up on what we see there, on the recent violence – which is prompted by a loss of confidence and trust – because the violations of the rule of law and the reports of political interference in the international crimes tribunal have become so frequent and obvious that we have simply got to step in. I echo the calls of others for a moratorium on the death penalty, but it is very, very important that we urge the government of Bangladesh to request international support by exploring what scope there may be for the United Nations to create a special international criminal tribunal. That way, all will have confidence that there will be fair trials, the whole of society will be confident of the outcomes, and even the government will be confident that the guilty will be punished."@en1
