"I voted against the report on EU – China relations. I agree with the points relating to the human rights situation in China. On many occasions, I have spoken out in favour of workers’ and trade union rights, the rights of ethnic and religious minorities, the right to self determination and other basic human and democratic rights. I fully support workers in China who, despite severe repression, fight for their right to set up independent trade unions. I salute the courage of Chinese bloggers defending the right to a free media and the many ordinary Chinese people who protest against the massive environmental damage done to their rivers, villages and cities. However, I cannot agree with the report when it criticises China’s opposition to a military intervention in Syria. I am a strong opponent of the Assad regime and defend the right of the Syrian people to defend themselves against the brutal onslaught of the Syrian army. My reasons for opposing an intervention are different to the Chinese regime. Nevertheless, as Libya has shown, a military intervention backed by imperialist powers is not in the interest of the people in Syria and will not end their plight."@en1
