"I voted in favour of the Hughes report because I think it is absolutely shocking that, to this day, thousands of tonnes of asbestos-containing materials are still in use across Europe. The WHO estimates that between 20 000 and 30 000 people die every year in the EU of asbestos-related diseases, and according to the ILO over 100 000 people worldwide die of asbestos related diseases every year. The role of many companies and governments in concealing or denying heath risks related to working with asbestos is scandalous. Around 75 % of schools in Northern Ireland contain asbestos. The policy of the government is to ‘manage’ rather than to remove the asbestos, claiming it ‘poses no significant risk’ if not disturbed. This is simply unacceptable and I fully support the campaign of teachers and unions like NIPSA for the removal of all asbestos from schools. In my opinion, what is needed to safeguard the health of workers and the general population is a worldwide ban on the use of asbestos and the immediate safe removal of all remaining asbestos."@en1
