"The EU has known since 1977 that there is no safe level of exposure to asbestos and asbestos has been banned in the EU since 2005. According to the WHO, the number of cases of asbestos-related diseases in the EU is 20 000-30 000 per year and has not yet reached its peak. I would urge the Commission and the Member States to act on the constructive recommendations set out in the Hughes report on establishing public asbestos registers; on ensuring that workers, especially younger workers and construction workers, likely to come into contact with asbestos are properly qualified and trained; on developing programmes for eliminating asbestos; on updating norms for the identification, notification, recognition and compensation of asbestos-related illnesses; on supporting groups for asbestos victims; and on moving for a global ban on asbestos. All Member States should follow Poland and adopt action plans aimed at making their countries asbestos-free. In particular we need to combine strategies on renovating buildings to make them more efficient with a parallel gradual removal of all asbestos. The forthcoming European strategy for health and safety (2014-20) should also include a coordinated strategy on asbestos, aimed at moving to asbestos-free workplaces."@en1
