"An endocrine disruptor is a substance which alters the function of the body’s hormone system, causing adverse health effects. I supported this own initiative report, which calls on the Commission to carry out further research and review relevant legislation in order to reduce human exposure to these chemicals. The proposals put forward include ensuring that legislation is based on comprehensive, scientific assessments and that no upper limit is set for such chemicals unless manufacturers can demonstrate that they are safe using scientific evidence. It also asks the Commission to develop research methods that minimise animal testing. Endocrine disruptors are found in many everyday household products, such as detergents, plastics, cosmetics and food packaging and there is evidence linking them to a number of diseases and hormone-related disorders. Consumers have a right to expect the highest possible safety standards for everything they buy in Europe and it is therefore essential that we take measures to restrict any exposure to these harmful substances."@en1
