"Mr President, human rights constitute one of the cornerstones of the foundations of the Union. As we encourage other nations across the globe to uphold and enforce fundamental civil and political rights, we must ourselves uphold the highest standards within the European Union. We must also continue to strive towards fair and just treatment for all our citizens. In this light, I commend the joint resolution on racism, xenophobia and hate crimes. Hate crimes have no place in a modern European society and must not be tolerated. As Israeli President Peres said this week in his moving keynote address in plenary, one of the inspirations of the founding of the European Union was the determination that Europe must never again see a repeat of the 1930s and the rise of the extremist ideologies that led to the Holocaust. We must address those worrying issues within and across our national borders in order to prevent discrimination and intolerance. We must also encourage equal treatment for all of our citizens throughout the European Union."@en1
