"Mr President, nuclear power is the energy of the present and the future; it is cleaner in terms of greenhouse gas emission, and more efficient and more sustainable than any other prominent energy source. It is crucial that we recognise the potential of nuclear energy. It is also crucial that we do so cautiously. Stress tests on nuclear power plants are very necessary to ensure the safe production of this form of energy. These plants must be able to withstand strain such as that associated with earthquakes.
The need to guarantee and monitor safety measures should not be misconstrued as a negative quality of nuclear power production, but rather a necessary regulation for a highly beneficial industry and to reassure the public.
While regulatory measures are essential, there is no need to encode them only at international level. Member States are also capable of monitoring plants within their borders and are better able to assess geographically-specific concerns."@en1
