"Mr President, my problem with this reform of the common agricultural policy is that it does not feel ‘common’ and it is not good for agriculture. Instead of a level playing field, it has been a matter of every man for themselves and every country for themselves.
We now have a policy which will penalise some of our largest, most productive farms just at a time when we need more food production. Instead of allowing us to export and share best practice in how farmers care for the environment, we are moving backwards – to set-aside and compulsory crop rotation. Instead of policies to bring our farmers closer to the market, we have a backward step that could return us to the days of butter mountains, milk lakes and even some tobacco slagheaps. This is not good for farming or for food, and it is not good for the environment either."@en1
