"I voted in favour of this report. The Lisbon Treaty sets the maximum number of MEPs at 751. When Croatia joins the EU as a full member, the total number of MEPs will be 766. This means that a number of Member States will lose seats. The apportionment of seats to ‘ideal’ numbers would be quite harsh for a number of Member States as some might gain or lose up to 3-4 seats. This proposal to spread out the number of seats reduced more evenly among the Member States is much fairer. It is important to note that the Lisbon Treaty also sets the minimum number of MEPs a country can have at 6, if Wales were an independent country we would have 9 MEPs."@en1
