"Mr President, I would like to say that I am calling on the Irish Government to use its veto at the European Council meeting. Ireland has only 12 seats out of over 750, which means we are already stretched to capacity to ensure that Irish voices are heard on key issues such as the CAP. If the number of seats is reduced, it will become even more difficult to follow legislation across the 22 different committees in Parliament. We need seat allocations which are weighted and which allow minority voices such as Ireland’s to be heard. If we compare Germany’s 99 seats with Ireland’s 12, it becomes clear to see the challenges we face in making sure small peripheral countries such as Ireland remain at the heart of Europe’s decision-making. I am calling for Ireland to use its veto to prevent this undemocratic and unfair reallocation."@en1
