"Madam President, one of the great gifts of Europe to human civilisation was the ideal of democratic self-government, of government of, by, and for the people. Of course, we cannot do that except within units of agreed people and that means allowing people to choose which country they belong to. I was delighted by the result of the referendum in the Falkland Islands. I look forward to many referendums on which country people want to belong to in Europe and I hope that, as in the Falkland Islands, and unlike what we have done in the past, we will respect the result of such referendums."@en1
