"Mr President, I must say that I am very pleased with the direction and the tone of this debate and the previous one and think that, in particular, the rapporteur and the Commissioner made very wise and sensible contributions.
Obviously, Europe has to put competitiveness at the very top of its agenda. If we want a competitive Europe, we do of course need energy that is affordable and a range of energy sources, and to have an open mind on what is available. I would obviously like to have more renewables and I think that can be done, but that does not mean the exclusion of everything else. Anybody with a bit of common sense knows that you need a mix.
For that reason in particular, I was pleased to hear the rapporteur saying that we must not have too dogmatic an approach. We must allow for the fact that technology is constantly improving, and we therefore have to keep an open mind on how we can address various issues which may be problematic now, but actually can become environmentally friendly and competitive and sensible in the future."@en1
