"Mr President, with the rise of the internet and the ease of access to information, there is growing concern about how women and, especially, young children can be exploited. We should be clear what we want to prevent and how policing the internet can work in practice.
The Internet Watch Foundation, based in my region, has an impressive record. It focuses specifically on child sexual abuse content and criminally obscene adult content. By sharing intelligence with the police, the IWF has aided the rescue of 12 children in the past two years.
Content, once reported, can usually be removed from the web within the hour if it is web-posted in the UK, but in other parts of the world it can take up to ten days.
Eleven colleagues from different countries and parts of this Parliament will soon be launching a written declaration highlighting the global dimension of the fight against on-line child sexual abuse content, emphasising the importance of sharing information and expertise internationally.
I am honoured to be one of the sponsors of the declaration and I urge colleagues to support this campaign so we can share best practice in the EU and across the globe."@en1
