"Mr President, thank you for giving me the privilege of finishing the debate. I must just say that, of all the issues we have debated here in Parliament, this is the one that I find most difficult to comprehend. Here we have a country – one of three in the world – suffering from the infectious disease of polio, a vaccine that has been proven to eliminate it around the world and workers for reputable NGOs being shot, wounded and killed as they go about the course of their work. It makes absolutely no sense. I think that what is needed is an information campaign or a conference of some sort where the authorities, both political and religious, the warlords and tribal leaders are brought into a room, shown the history of polio, how it was eliminated in other countries and ask them whether they want this to happen in their country or do they not. If they say ‘no’, suspend the vaccination. Let us not put genuine people at risk any longer until a bit of commonsense prevails."@en1
