"Ireland currently receives approximately EUR 500 million per annum in long-term investment loans from the EIB. These loans are being used at present to develop the ESB network, to support Bord Gais’s development of renewable energy, to provide new educational and student facilities at UCD, to build and refurbish primary and secondary schools, to replace water mains and upgrade drinking-water and wastewater treatment facilities, and for onward investment to SMEs, amongst others. I welcome the EIB Governors’ recent decision to confirm the EUR 10 billion increase in the EIB’s capital. This should allow the EIB to increase lending by up to EUR 60 billion and to leverage total investments of up to EUR 180 billion by 2015. However, such investment would still amount to just 0.5 % of EU GDP so further increases in the EIB’s capital are needed to support growth and jobs in Ireland and all across Europe. I would urge the EIB to prioritise SMEs particularly by increasing support for the EU’s SME Access to Finance Initiative and by ensuring that loans to banks for onward lending to SMEs do actually reach SMEs. SME funding is a major problem in Ireland and in many other Member States."@en1
