"This resolution suggests priorities for the 22nd session of the United Nations Human Rights Council that will run between 25 February and 22 March 2013. I strongly support human rights principles while remaining cautious about international legal mechanisms which may override national legislation in democratic countries. However, the awful reality is that in so many other countries – Syria, North Korea, Iran, are among the more egregious examples – human rights are virtually non existent. It is misplaced and unfortunate however that Sri Lanka – a democratic country recovering from a 30-year terrorist campaign – should attract critical reference. There is distortion of post-conflict events in Sri Lanka by those that have a vested interest in continuing discontent and turbulence. I support reconciliation, the independence of the judiciary, accountability of those who may have committed atrocities, and the development of a free, united and prosperous country now that the shadow of terrorism has been removed in Sri Lanka. It is inappropriate for the resolution to draw on the report of an informal ‘Panel of Experts’ on Sri Lanka – the Darusman Report – which did not even visit Sri Lanka."@en1
