"I welcome the Commission’s new definition of corporate social responsibility (CSR) as ‘the responsibility of enterprises for their impacts on society’. This is recognition of the fact that CSR cannot just be seen as a purely voluntary mechanism by business, an expensive ‘add-on’, but that it is in fact integral to business strategy and indeed a key factor for competitiveness. Corporate social responsibility is not separate from the economic crisis. It was central to its causes and to our recovery from the crisis. Confidence is needed to help Member States’ economies recover and building trust in business is essential to achieving this confidence. Moving from short-term to longer-term thinking is not just a challenge for the financial sector but for all firms, multinationals and SMEs alike. The Commission should now come forward with a robust legislative proposal on non-financial reporting by companies over the coming months, and also tackle the problem of excessive bonuses. I also hope that it will respond positively to Parliament’s call for proposals to combat misleading and false information regarding commitments to CSR and relating to the social and environmental impact of products and services, over and above the requirements of the Unfair Commercial Practices Directive."@en1
