"This report, whilst well intentioned, amounts to such an extension of the EU’s competence in public health that my group’s UK delegation decided to vote against. Nobody can argue that Member States can learn from each other in terms of how to best provide appropriate support and care to our elderly. Moreover, the report is right to highlight that older people can make a valuable contribution to society through their experience, and they should enjoy their retirement free of stigma or abuse. Nonetheless, this report attempts to needlessly extend the EU’s competency in public health, by suggesting that this competence should be incorporated into all existing EU policies, from employment to economic policy, to give just two big examples. This report also attempts to demand that all Member States exempt their welfare and healthcare systems from their programmes of fiscal consolidation. In short, it is not the place of this Parliament to interfere with Member States’ healthcare arrangements, and therefore my delegation elected to vote against this report."@en1
