"I welcome the majority of this report as it deals with healthy aging in a comprehensive manner, including calls for improvements to the education and health systems and it also calls for the promotion of active aging, supporting independent living and opposes stereotyping and gender discrimination. However I abstained as I could not support the part of paragraph 43 that called for reforms to pensions systems in order for ‘more coherence to be established between the effective retirement age, the official retirement age and life expectancy’. After decades of working and contributing to society, all workers deserve a long retirement on a decent pension, free from financial worry. I reject the idea that the economic crisis or demographic changes mean that the retirement age should be increased. Workers should not pay for crisis through attacks on their pension schemes. Increasing the retirement age will mean a drastic cut in people’s living standards in old age and a recipe for increased profits for big business and for the financial industry in particular."@en1
