"I voted in favour of this report as, with the European Union currently going through a major demographic transition, I felt it is more important now than ever to plan for our future. This is especially the case as it is projected that there will be around 151 million people in Europe over the age of 65 by 2060. The majority of places and urban centres in the European Union are not prepared to cope with the demographic transition that is taking place, along with the increased urbanisation of the European population. It is for this reason that we must develop a coherent strategy to transform these places into ones which are suitable for, and friendly to, Europe’s ageing population. I believe that the European Innovation Partnership on Active and Healthy Ageing is a very important step in this regard and I am glad to support it. I also feel that the involvement of regional and local policy-makers in this partnership, along with the increased participation of older people, makes this a very worthwhile proposal indeed."@en1
