"As this Parliament’s representative for British Overseas Territories, I have great sympathy for the EU’s outermost regions in their social and agricultural challenges. Removed from the Union’s geographical and financial core, farmers in these regions struggle to remain competitive in today’s harsh economy. It is therefore our duty to provide them with assistance when we can, but this proposal is not the way to do so.
Firstly, it is unacceptable for the EU to provide aid specifically for the cultivation of tobacco. We cannot use CAP funding to subsidise the spread of lung cancer and social misery. While these farmers should be rescued from hardship as far as possible, we should not have to choose between two evils. Furthermore, if we wish to reduce our budget, a payment of EUR 40 million will certainly not help our efforts.
It is therefore necessary to sustain the agricultural sector of our outermost regions, whose farmers are full citizens of the EU, but I see no reason why social assistance cannot also be financially and ethically responsible."@en1
