"Madam President, I would like to comment on the European sugar refining industry. Cane refiners provide over 4 500 highly skilled jobs in some of the poorest regions of the EU. Europe’s largest cane refinery is located in my constituency of London. The refinery is operating at 60% of its capacity because of a lack of supply from cane growers. The refinery has reported an operating loss of EUR 41 million, and 28 members of staff have been made redundant. A further 67 members of staff have been forced to reduce their working hours. This all comes at a time when sugar prices in the EU are 80% above world prices.
The cane refining industry needs raw materials. The Commission can make this happen. The Commission can protect jobs and save one of Europe’s oldest manufacturing industries, but so far the Commission has refused to throw cane refiners a lifeline. It must help European consumers by including sugar cane imports in its plans to reduce the soaring cost of sugar, and it must help cane refiners by ensuring a level playing field for them and beet processors."@en1
