"I send my deepest condolences to the families of the 117 men and women who died in the Tazreen Fashion factory fire in Dhaka in November last year. About half a million British-Bangladeshis live in the United Kingdom today and I am always active in supporting the Bangladeshi community in my constituency of London. While I believe that worker safety must be a priority, the Bangladeshis whom I meet in London remind me that, as the third biggest garments exporter in the world, much of the country’s economy depends on textile exports to the EU. As a stable and secular democracy, we should be supporting not punishing Bangladesh. Garment factories employ 3 million people, the majority of whom are poor women. I support strategic aid projects such as the EU and Germany’s EUR 2.4 million project to support labour standards in the garment industry. Safer workers are better workers and the international community should back Bangladesh to ensure that tragedies such as the November Dhaka fire never happen again."@en1
