"Mr President, this issue has a very strong possibility of opening Pandora’s Box for many sectors of the European agricultural industry, and it certainly sends a chill down the spine. I had the opportunity a number of years ago to go to Brazil and see for myself that, despite what the Commission were telling us at that time – despite all the assurances they were giving that Brazil was the perfect place for producing beef – we found something totally to the contrary. Let me make it very clear. The traceability issues for Brazil and Argentina must have the same standards as those imposed within Europe – not equivalent; they must be the same or even better. We have to look at the implications for our beef sector within that. Let me be very clear about this – and I will not change my mind on this: for many countries, be it Brazil, Argentina, the Far East or anywhere else, food produced that does not meet the same stringent standards as we produce in the European Union, should not be allowed in. It is as simple as that. We have got to keep that particular position – that is a principle that we must never bend the knee on."@en1
