"When the Lisbon Treaty was adopted, the European Parliament gained more power over EU legislation, making the process much more democratic. This has meant that several current laws have had to be revised. One example is the law on cod stocks. While the changes voted on today should have been restricted to procedural ones only, the Fisheries Committee took the opportunity to ease the restrictions on cod fishing at the same time. The rules mean that small fishermen will be able to catch Baltic cod in coastal areas during the summer months. I voted in favour as the latest statistics show that Baltic Sea cod stocks are recovering. While this change does not directly affect the Welsh fishing fleet, I hope it is a reflection of a general trend of easing requirements when we can be sure that sustainability is ensured."@en1
