"I voted in favour of this report calling for a new law on restructuring and the need to inform and consult with employees. This is an issue of vital importance to Wales and one in which I have campaigned in the European Parliament over many years. Wales has suffered badly from the restructuring of heavy industry and from companies closing or moving elsewhere with little regard for the people or the communities who have served them loyally. The closure of the Burberry factory in the Rhondda was a stark example of this, as was the Friction Dynamex case in Caernarfon. We cannot always prevent job losses, but we can ensure that workers are aware of possible problems well in advance, can take part in the debate on future options, rather than just redundancy, and are provided with proper skills and training if they need to seek work elsewhere. I believe that this new law is essential."@en1
