"Mr President, along with my fellow UK Conservative MEPs, I voted against this report. We firmly believe that such proposals for a legal act would be disproportionate and add little value to the needs of businesses facing restructuring. I understand the political wish to be doing something to help workers who have lost their jobs through no fault of their own. But the recommendations in this report will create burdens for employers facing restructuring which will restrict their flexibility and thus further damage jobs in the future.
In particular, it calls for companies to give an early explanation and justification to all relevant stakeholders, and would also make companies responsible for ensuring that ‘surveillance and counselling aimed to avoid or minimise the negative impact of the restructuring process on both the physical and psycho-social for both redundant workers, if any, and those staying’ is provided.
We do not believe that it is the role of the European Parliament to call for such initiatives. We believe that adapting to change requires an integrated approach covering multiple areas, including industrial employment, education and innovation and not the unrealistic and impractical proposals contained in this report."@en1
