"Mr President, I will try to be brief with my concluding remarks. I want to thank the Commissioner for his contribution. I also want to thank colleagues for their contribution in the debate this evening and particularly the shadows and also the Committee on Employment and Social Affairs which gave an opinion on my own-initiative report. It does seem that there is widespread support for the idea that we should be looking to bring funds together where possible. I do believe however that there is still a lot of work to be done in terms of bringing the rules of the funds together and I think we need to work harder on that in the future. But if we can achieve that I think it would be better for applicants. I also think it would make the EU funds more effective in the future, because, as the Commissioner said, it is important that we try to make sure that funds in the future help us meet the 2020 targets. But also it is important for applicants that we try to simplify the process. Where possible we need to make sure that the process is as flexible as possible for local authorities and regions so they can meet their own individual needs as well. I really believe that some of the suggestions in my report about mechanisms to bring funds together can help us achieve that. I know from the discussions I have had that many regions are already working on these mechanisms to bring funds together in the future, but I also know that many regions have not started to do that. We also know that outside the common framework there are still other funds like Horizon 2020 for example. I would hope that the Commission would work with the regions and local authorities to get good practice where we can bring these funds together so they have a much bigger impact in the future. I am sure the Commissioner will want to do that and I am sure regions and local authorities would want to help him do that also."@en1
