"Madam President, this obviously is a serious issue and, of all the sections that have suffered as a result of the economic recession, young people – as has been said – have suffered most. They were told that if they went to school, studied hard, got a qualification, they were guaranteed a job for life. They have done all the preparation – but no jobs. I have known students who have gone for jobs – three- or four-hour interviews – and never heard a word back from the employers. So that is one thing which needs to be done: they need to be treated more sensitively and fairly when it comes to looking for jobs so that they do not become too depressed if they do not get the job. Secondly, emigration has taken hold very much in my country. It was highlighted at the weekend that in one school only three of the Class of 96 are left in the country. It is timely that the Commissioner should be making these proposals, so let us make 2013 the year in which we stood by our young people and gave them hope and jobs for the future."@en1
