"A Uachtaráin, gan dabht ar bith is cás tragóideach é an Congó, go háirithe nuair a thuigeann tú gur ceart don tír seo a bheith ar cheann de na tíortha is saibhre ar domhan de bharr na n-acmhainní nádúrtha atá inti. Ach ní mar sin atá.
As has been pointed out, even though the Democratic Republic of Congo has had independence for 50 years, there has been very little progress in terms of establishing real democracy and respect for law and order in the country. As a result, there is widespread violence, no respect whatsoever for women – as has been pointed out by previous speakers – and even, recently, as many as 600 schools have been looted.
We just cannot make progress in a situation like that. It is incumbent on us, at European and UN level, to try first of all to stabilise the country. Secondly, countries like Rwanda and Uganda should be forced to butt out so that the Congo can at least try to solve its problems with those who really want to help."@en1
