"I agree with all the points that this report makes in relation to the worrying deterioration of the human rights situation in Russia. On many occasions, I have spoken out against the disgraceful arrest and prison sentence of the members of Pussy Riot and demanded their unconditional release. I am equally concerned about the repression against the political opposition in Russia and the whipping up of nationalism, racism and xenophobia by the Putin government. Members of my sister party in Russia are very involved in anti-racist struggles and actively defend LGTB rights, including the right to organise ‘Gay Pride’ marches which have now been banned in Russia for 100 years as part of a general clamp-down on the right to organise and protest. The reason why I voted against the report in the main relates to the stand this report takes in relation to the National Question in Abkhazia and South Ossetia. By explicitly referring to them as Georgian territories, the report ignores the right of self determination of people living in those territories. It is solely up to them to decide on this vital issue while the rights of all ethnic and religious minorities need to be respected."@en1
