"I voted in favour of this own-initiative report which calls for a more consistent and coherent approach to human rights by the EU. The current economic crisis has to be taken into account, for example. I know how badly it has affected families in Wales and women in particular. It has an influence too on how the EU is perceived in the world. An important clause in the report is one calling for enforceable human rights clauses to be included in all agreements concluded by the EU. This is an issue on which I have received a lot of correspondence from constituents in Wales. People expect the EU to maintain high standards on human rights and I believe the recommendations in this report will help do that, particularly as it was adopted unanimously."@en1
