"Explanation of Vote - Wojciechowski Report: Protection of animals during transport
I am very supportive of animal welfare measures. At the same time I want to ensure that the interests of thoroughbred and livestock breeders and our farming industry are properly protected. There is no contradiction in this.
The report focuses on the conditions that all farm animals are kept in whilst being transported to slaughter. A distinction has to be maintained between the transportation of animals for slaughter and for other reasons. In the UK, and in the East of England, the thoroughbred industry has an excellent record on transport conditions, and of course, has an interest in seeing that its horses are treated well in transit.
The report calls for a reconsideration of the blanket eight-hour limit on journeys to slaughter, taking into account instead geographic conditions, sparse road networks and remote locations. It importantly stresses that existing legislation must be better enforced through increased inspections of lorries carrying animals to slaughter and the imposition of sanctions where appropriate. This is largely a continental problem. For these reasons, I felt able to support this report."@en1
