"This report was intended to further liberalise the EU’s groundhandling market, which provides services at airports such as baggage, freight and mail handing. However, the report had already been rejected by the Transport Committee over fears that the proposal to raise the minimum number of groundhandling providers at airports would lead to a race to the bottom in terms of conditions for workers, and would also have affected the quality of service. I joined fellow Labour MEPs in voting to send the report back to the Transport Committee for further negotiation as, while we are not completely against liberalisation, we felt there needed to be more safeguards in place. In particular we felt that new legislation should recognise that different approaches will work better in different countries and, furthermore, that if we are to have increased liberalisation, it should include appropriate protection for workers, including proper contracts and wages."@en1
