"This is one of the areas where we should try to enhance the question of subsidiarity. In principle it is a good idea to establish a common framework for producing statistics on safety from crime. Member States will, by the transmission of harmonised European data on crime and safety based upon a household/personal survey, suddenly be able to respond to ‘people’s feelings of personal insecurity as an important aspect of citizens’ well-being.’ So, for the cost of EUR 12 million it is proposed to authorise an EU-level survey based on the personal feelings associated with the fear of the crime. But why, in these times of austerity, would we spend the cost of a new hospital in Britain on gathering data on the perceptions and feelings towards crime in an entirely subjective way? Are we in the business of funding university social science departments? Do we indeed have any competence in field of criminal law? No. This is a waste of time. It brings more ridicule on this place and MEPs should realise that the last thing we want a reputation for is as a talking shop."@en1
