"Mr President, as a Member of Parliament for Northern Ireland, I cannot support the Commission’s proposal for establishing rules on the introduction of noise-related operating restrictions in EU airports. The proposals would abolish the provision that exists in Directive 2002 allowing the George Best Belfast City Airport to enact more stringent measures relating to addressing aircraft noise because of its unique location. This step would negatively impact businesses and residents living in the areas of east and south Belfast and North Down and thus should be robustly opposed in principle for the protection of my constituents.
The Commission’s new regulation rightly focuses on addressing aircraft noise on an airport-by-airport basis and with due regard to implementing operating restrictions only where necessary and on a cost-effective basis. However, this worthwhile premise is overshadowed by the fact that the draft regulation only focuses on airports with a large annual volume of traffic, and that regional airports and those residing nearby would thus remain unaffected."@en1
