"Mr President, I welcome the Commission’s proposal on noise-related operating restrictions because I believe it has taken a balanced approach, taking into account both the effect of noise on quality of life and also the importance of air services and aviation in a commercial sense.
Both the aviation sector and businesses need some certainty to operate and we cannot let situations happen where a local authority will decide a night ban that could then be considered illegal under competition law. So I think it is a shame that the Commission will not be able to scrutinise these decisions in this respect, after that section was voted down in plenary today.
I think we need to take action to phase out the noisiest aircraft for the sake of our citizens, and at the same time to give airlines a certainty and continuity in the way we deal with noise at airports."@en1
