"Mr President, in spite of the Council regulation on animal transport having been in place since 2005 there are still significant problems remaining and the aims of the regulation have not been fulfilled, mainly due to the lack of enforcement and poor compliance. We should be opposing unnecessarily long transport times for animals to slaughter, not only because of the obvious breach of animal welfare standards with respect to the animal, but also because long transport times run the risk of poor hygiene and the subsequent transmission and spread of diseases. Furthermore, stress to animals can create toxins, negatively impacting on meat quality. Consumers strongly support shorter transport times and cannot be ignored. Up to six million animals are transported live for slaughter throughout the EU each year. They are livestock; we must pay full respect to their welfare."@en1
