Since the discovery of penicillin in the 1930s, antimicrobials have revolutionised medical and veterinary practice, leading to significant reductions in the mortality rate from a wide range of serious and often fatal bacterial infections while paving the way for innovative invasive surgeries to enter widespread use. The extraordinary medicinal progress of the antibiotic era, however, risks being undermined by the growing threat of antimicrobial resistance."@en1
