"When used properly, antibiotics are an effective way of dealing with diseases and infections in both humans and animals. But in recent years, resistance caused by over-use has become a problem. Resistance to antibiotics means that common health problems become less treatable and more serious, causing risk to both animal and human health. As farmers in Wales will know, maintaining a high level of hygiene and using proper feed to prevent disease is the best way to manage this problem. Veterinary medicine should be used as little as possible. But it is easy to see why prescribing medicine is an easy solution and how the problem has got out of control. Now is the time to put a plan in place. I voted in favour of a report on anti-microbial resistance which calls for the responsible use of medicines in farm animals. An action plan by the European Commission does not go far enough. The Welsh Government must take up this issue more thoroughly through the Wales Animal Health and Welfare Strategy Steering Group. We must fully understand the scale of the problem, so that we can address the issue and maintain our high standards of food safety, animal health and welfare."@en1
