"In this, the European Year for Active Ageing, it is very important that we address the chronic and disabling diseases which particularly affect women due to their longer life expectancy. I voted in favour of this proposal because it proposes action including an EU strategy on diabetes, better preventative healthcare for older women, research on elder abuse and the creation of a women’s health research institute within Horizon 2020. Cardiovascular disease was the main cause of death of over 5 000 women in Wales in 2010. The most common types of cancer in women in Wales are breast cancer (31%), colorectal cancer (12%) and lung cancer (12%). The life expectancy of women in Wales is 81.7 years and attention has been drawn in recent weeks to problems relating to care for the elderly in hospitals and in care homes. This proposed strategic plan of research into healthcare for women, and a research institute, would help us in dealing with many of these issues, and Welsh expertise could assist the work of the institute."@en1
