"I voted against the ratification of this trade agreement due to unresolved concerns about the human and labour rights situation in Colombia and the ongoing persecution of trade unionists. Colombia is widely recognised as the most dangerous place in the world to be a trade unionist with more than 225 murdered there in the last five years. The perpetrators have evaded prosecution in the majority of cases and there have been wide-spread accusations of corruption in the judicial process. As such, while we recognise that measures on human rights have been included in the agreement, Labour MEPs felt that insufficient progress has been made to justify ratifying the agreement at this time; we are supported in this view by a number of Colombian civil society organisations. Furthermore, we felt that ratification would remove any incentive for the Colombian government to work to improve the situation. Although it has been argued that the agreement will give the EU more influence in this area, a Labour Action Plan instigated as part of the US-Colombia Agreement has not seen any discernable improvement in the situation of trade unionists in the country."@en1
